It takes an SMB to understand an SMB

Start ups and SMB's listen up: Does your company have the luxury of hiring a national PR firm simply for the cachet of misperceived brand enhancement? Would you rather see your company's name in publications, on blogs and in the minds of your potential customers, or on top of an unread press release bearing the logo of one of the regional offices of a national firm?

It takes an SMB to understand an SMB. In the last two years four BIGfrontier clients have successfully met their goals of being acquired, receiving funding or selling their companies. Our traditional and non traditional PR services are designed to do one thing: trigger growth. The proof is in our results, just look at our case studies, we'll put them up against any firm in the city. The May Report awards Josh Kurutz for the best card Ron May has seen in quite a while
+++++++++++++++
Subject: Re: Josh, I am giving you an award for your business card and I see a lot of cards.
Date: 6/25/2008 3:16:06 P.M. Central Daylight Time
From: jkurutz@alumni.caltech.edu
To: RONALDMAY@aol.com

Ron,

I'm glad you like my design.

I was originally inspired by a symposium we had a few years ago at the
University of Chicago for our multidisciplinary Institute for Biophysical
Dynamics (IBD). I noticed that bringing different varieties of scientists
together for exposure to new endeavors was a great idea, but there was a
problem with its execution, and it had to do with communication.

Researchers studying nucleic acids, for example, delivered their talk as
if they were speaking to other nucleic acids people and used all sorts of
technical jargon that the non-nucleic acids people weren't so familiar
with. You could map the audience as a bunch of Venn diagrams, and each
speaker was supposed to be addressing the union of sets, but the message
was only getting to the speaker's home set.

Everyone in the audience had been taught all the necessary nomenclature
years ago, but no one was willing to step up and admit they'd forgotten
it. I thought if people had a small card that showed them the basic
nomenclature for different biomolecule types, they could discreetly look
at it, thus catalyzing learning.

To satisfy this need, I made a universal translator card. As an
afterthought, I moved some stuff around to fit in my contact information,
and made it my business card.

Here's what you see on the card's current iteration:

PROTEIN SECTION: all twenty common natural amino acids, laid out in a
grid. Each amino acid's square contains (let's use tryptophan as an
example when needed):
a) its full name (e.g., tryptophan)
b) its three-letter designation (trp)
c) its single-letter designation (W)
d) its codon in the genetic code (UGG)
e) its molecular structure, including proper stereochemistry of chiral
centers, and prochiral (pro-R) hydrogen atoms
f) greek-letter designations of the different atoms,
g) its sidechain acid dissociation constant (pKa), if called for
h) its sidechain monoisotopic residue mass to sufficient significant
figures that one could ascertain its atomic composition - important for
the proteomics people (186.07931 g/mol)
i) its average NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) chemical shifts if the
residue were in a random coil portion of a protein: 1H backbone amide and
alpha atoms, 15N backbone amide atom, and 13C alpha atom. (4.66, 8.25,
121.3, and 57.5 ppm, respectively)
*** Three edges of each square have quantitative scales:
j) Sidechain hydrophobicity is shown with bar whose length corresponds the
free energy of partitioning between water and octanol, in kcal/mol; the
scale for hydrophobicity is shown on the right side of each square, bars
for hydrophilic residues are blue and those for hydrophobic residues are
yellow. (tryptophan is hydrophobic, approximately -2.2 kcal/mol)
*** The bottom and left edges are lined with scales corresponding to X and
Y axes of a grid overlaid on the square. A crosshair made of a green
vertical bar and a purple horizontal bar is placed on the coordinates
corresponding to two quantities:
k) The green bar's location on the X axis corresponds to the residue's
stability in an alpha helix, relative to alanine, in kcal/mol
(approximately 0.02 kcal/mol)
l) The purple bar's location on the Y axis corresponds to the residue's
stability in a beta sheet structure, in kcal/mol (approximately +0.22
kcal/mol)
*** On the facing "page", there is
m) a legend showing numbers for each of these axes
n) literature references to sources of the quantities shown.
o) nomenclature of the major torsion angles in the protein babckbone
p) an explanation of the genetic code's letters corresponding to multiple
RNA bases

NUCLEIC ACIDS SECTION
q) full names of the five usual ribonucleotides in RNA and DNA
r) single letter codes for each of the bases
s) their covalent structures, including proper stereochemistry
t) identification of which bases are purines and pyrimidines
u) numerical designation of of the carbon atoms in ribose and the bases v)
structural definitions distinguishing nucelosides and nucleotides w)
structural definitions describing the nomenclature distinguishing a base
from a base with ribose attached (e.g., adenine vs. adenosine) for each
base
x) covalent difference between DNA and RNA
y) greek letter designations of the polynucleotide backbone torsion angles
z) greek letter designations of the ribose torsion angles
aa) the canonical Watson-Crick hydrogen bonding patterns between bases
(A-T and G-C)
ab) the major interatomic "contacts" one normally observes in NMR to
determine the 3D conformation of a nucleic acid

LIPD SECTION
ac) structure of the common framework of phospholipids, to which different
headgroups and alkyl chains are attached
ad) two-letter designations and of five common headgroups
ae) structures of six common alkyl chains

CARBOHYDRATE SECTION
af) full names of the common unmodified hexoses (carbohydrates with six
carbon atoms in their "backbone") with 0 or 1 axial substituent hydroxyl
group
ag) three-letter abbreviations for each of these hexoses
ah) special presentation of fucose and sialic acid, which are common but
could not fit the generic hexose format
ai) numerical designations of the "backbone" carbon atoms
aj) structural distinction of D and L stereochemistry
ak) structural distinction of alpha and beta interglycosidic linkages al)
structural definitions of interglycosidic phi and psi torsion angles am)
identification of NMR observables used for determining interglycosidic
torsion angles

NMR SECTION
an) depictions of interatomic connectivities observed in 17 different NMR
experiments.

BONUS
ao) I also stuck in the Hofmeister Series, an set of anions and cations
with multiple biophysical effects, placed in the order of the strength of
those effects

BACK OF THE CARD
ap) light-toned grid for graphing
*** There is a table displaying conversions between:
aq) concentration, in micromolar <=> concentrarion, in mg/ml for three
common protein sizes
ar) concentration, in micromolar <=> milligrams required for an NMR
sample, for three common protein sizes

Other notes:
- I have not posted this card for public download. I've copyrighted it,
and I want to get advice from IP people on how to go about getting it
printed up and sold in bookstores like a pocket periodic table (which I
always carry)
- I'm looking for a printer who can give me high-quality double-sided
color printouts on cardstock that, critically, line up the two sides to
within 1/32" reliably. At Kinko's this must be done manually, and
oftentimes the staff cannot achieve the necessary alignment, even with my
help.
- The white lines underneath my name on the front of the card are from a
"crosspeak" in a two-dimensional NMR spectrum.
- If anyone knows Edward Tufte, guru of information display, please give
him my card.

I'll see what I can do with the math symbols and Voyager disk diagrams.

I'd like to put in a quick plug for the Science in Art exhibit, at which
I'll be showing some pieces. This show, sponsored by the UofC, Science
Chicago (the macArthur Foundation), and Chicago Artists' Month (City of
Chicago), will start on the UofChicago Hyde Park campus, and travel to
Fermilab and Argonne. We just sent out a "call for art" to solicit
entries of "art whose subject is science and created by scientists and/or
artists." I'll be entering my Audible NMR compositions there, amongst
others (http://homepage.mac.com/jkurutz/FileSharing21.html). You can read
more about it at uchisciart.org

Thanks!

- Josh

About Us

General Biomass Company develops proprietary technology to produce large quantities of cellulase enzymes, the protein catalysts that turn cellulose into glucose more cost effectively. It takes approximately 100 grams of cellulase enzyme proteins to make one gallon of cellulosic ethanol. This means that one billion gallons of fuel ethanol would require 110,000 tons of cellulase enzymes. The ability to produce glucose from cellulose rather than from starch is an enabling technology for many cellulosic bioproducts: ethanol and butanol for biofuels and lactic acid for bioplastics.

We also offer consulting services in the areas of biomass processing and cellulosic ethanol production. Please contact us with your needs at dgibbs@generalbiomass.com. We are proud to be a member of the American Coalition for Ethanol , the Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization and the Renewable Energy Action Project (REAP).

The biomass industry in general, and cellulosic ethanol production in particular, offer major growth opportunities over the next 5 to 10 years and beyond. Development and commercialization of these technologies can significantly reduce net carbon emissions in the transportation sector, reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil, promote rural development, and provide opportunities to export technology and components. We welcome investors, partners and applicants who share these interests and would like to help us achieve these goals.

* FILE UNDER "DANGEROUS BULLSH**": Diamond's John Sviokla joins amateur fad and abandons management for "dialogue"
http://discussionleader.hbsp.com/sviokla/2008/06/why_every_business_has_the_app.html

* Kristi Lafleur, get a good night's sleep. You're next on my hit parade. Where is the next TiE meeting? Also, Jason Rexilius, when is BarCamp? And where? You have delayed so much. I know that Jason is testing his list this week.

* Bill Shepard, the manager at North Community Bank (Belmont/Broadway) whom I deal with, just got Samsung Instinct, just out on the 20th of June and it is being called an iPod killer. It has GPS and just about everything else, Bill says. He has had it for five days now and already a few of his friends have bought it.

Here is a good review: http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/cell-phones/samsung-instinct/9457.html

* Finishing up on the Illinois Coalition for Science and Technology, I had some questions for Dennis Sienko that I had not asked Monday night, so I called him this morning on his cell.

1. To whom does he report?

Answer: A board that has not been put together yet. It will reflect the public/private partnership they are trying to create.

2. But right now, whom is it?

Answer: Right now, he is basically working under the rubric of the Chicagoland Chamber with Jerry Roper and Peggy Luce. The Chamber is "paying their bills" temporarily while the legal structure of the 501(c)(6) is set up. The Chamber also provided the process by which they selected the law firm and the PR firm they are using. And Dennis' office is at the offices of the Chamber at this time.

3. How did the $500K grant come about?

Answer: The grant was money given to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for the purpose of setting up this organization and UIUC subcontracted it out to the Chicagoland Chamber. That took place around or about April 15, 2008. The grant came from DCEO. I asked Dennis whom he would talk to at DCEO if he had anything to discuss and the answer was Jack Lavin, the director.

I said to Dennis that it seems goofy to me that DCEO would give $500K to UIUC to create an organization that is supposed to help the entire state and all the universities and labs get federal money in the state. Dennis had no direct answer since he was not involved in the decision to give the original grant. I suppose that is topic #1 the next time I see Jack Lavin.

4. How was the law firm selected?

Answer: They used the process in place at the Chamber for making such selections and it was a "bid" in the sense that the firms made proposals. Greenberg Traurig, LLP had a few things they really liked. It has an office in Washington, D.C. and it has the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina as a client. Dennis said he is working with Tony Abboud here in Chicago (http://www.gtlaw.com/People/AnthonyLAbboud?wosView=quickContact ) and with Diane Blagman (http://www.gtlaw.com/People/DianeJBlagman) in D. C.

They considered three firms, he said. And I will bet you that all three are Chamber members.

The term of the law firm contract extends to September 30, 2009 as I said in the last report.

Dennis said that three things are needed from the law firm:

A. Setting up the 501(c)(6) with the IRS.

B. On-going legal work.

C. Assistance in working with the folks in Washington, D.C.

5. How was the PR firm selected?

They considered two and half firms, Dennis said, two big ones and one smaller. Edelman has a proprietary piece of software that helps target the people you want to get to called Connector. Dennis said that he has the success stories to tell, he needs the help in getting those stories to the parties they need to talk to, mostly the Illinois Congressional delegation. But also, I would presume, key officials in federal agencies. The person at Edelman he is meeting with soon is Valerie Alexander. ( http://www.suntimes.com/news/marin/1022876,CST-EDT-Carol25.article) I could not find a bio on Valerie, but I did find her mentioned in a Carol Marin article on politics in the Chicago Sun-Times. I asked Dennis about advertising Illinois for entrepreneurs as Michigan does. There is no budget for that currently, he said and running ads like the ones Jeff Daniels does for Michigan is not a part of this program, not yet at least.

6. What was the term he used in our conversation Monday night?

Answer: The goal is to develop an "Illinois research agenda."

Dennis said that this is at a strategic level. They are not looking to interfere in existing relationships, he said. You know what, I forgot to ask him about IT. I know he has biotech and materials on his mind.

7. What was the whole bit about CSOs, CTOs, and VPs of Research?

Answer: Dennis wants to help forge the public/private partnership by getting the Chief Scientific Officers and the Chief Technical Officers in major corporations to talk to the VPs of Research in the universities and labs. The idea is to give the VPs of Research a notion of what is coming down the pike. But the interaction will certainly be two-way, Dennis said, when I asked him about that.

8. The next thing I need to do is put together a list of projects they will seek funding for.

* The discussion of Terry Howerton and his outlook on things and my interviews with him and interactions with him is too complicated and way too long a discussion to put in one report, but let me get started at least. We covered so many subjects. I talked Terry at the ITA party on June 12th, the SAB charity poker tourney on the 14th, and this Sunday, the 22nd for 1.75 hours.

Here is a sample of what we talked about.

1. Successful ITA committees such as Academic Outreach and what is being done there. They have 130 volunteers from schools and universities all over Chicago and Illinois. Much more on this.

2. Howerton's view of what things need to be done, such as having an entrepreneurship program in the CPS and even having that meet at their offices (which will be new in a year because they have outgrown the current space and TH says that they are looking for a 65,000sf space now; and they have 35 firms on a waiting list for getting into the space); or having a U. of C. marketing class that currently meets at Gleacher meet at their offices. His view of rural workforce development as a key area for future focus.

3. The whole financial relationship between ITA, TechNexus, and FastRoot: Who owns the lease, who writes the checks, how the money is distributed, what is done with the profits from the rent, etc.? How FastRoot uses the ITA and vice versa in marketing, etc.

4. Howerton's take on what happened to the Early Stage and Partnering conferences that were prominent under the CSA.

5. His view of the four Speaking of Success programs they have held. Tonight is the fourth program. The speaker tonight is Jerry Putnam of Archipelago fame and the NYSE. The previous three programs were SurePayroll which I attended with Troy Henikoff and Michael Alter; Chuck Templeton of Open Table fame (http://restaurant-hospitality.com/top_chefs/rh_imp_12464/) and Hank Adams of SportVision. I just noticed that Templeton was a U.S. Army Ranger.

6. TH's take on ITA members, the board, sponsors, service providers, VCs, investors, a tech council for Illinois, etc. One little nugget I can't resist. I asked Terry a question on how he thinks I got certain info. He said that "Chris must be talking" or words to that effect. I said, "Oh, that reminds me, I wanted to ask you about Rollyson." Terry said that being an ITA member brings with it the right to spend some time in the offices of the ITA when you need it, like an hour a week. But Rollyson abuses the privilege and shows up four days a week. Fred is going to talk to Chris about his paying rent, he said. BTW, from Howerton, I found out that Troy Haaland of eSigma moved out four months ago and from another source I heard that Melissa G. has moved out. They do not have an annual lease. It is month to month, Terry explained. They have a waiting list of 35 people who want to move in, but it appears that there is some turnover, maybe it costs too much. The standard rent chzrge is $500 per desk for the first two seats, I believe. That includes phone and conference room and a lot of other things, he said.

7. What is happening with FastRoot raising money and where he may get it and in what form?

8. TH's take on having competitors in the ITA and his view of how ITA members may become FastRoot clients or may have been FastRoot clients before they became ITA members -- that whole issue of ITA/FastRoot.

9. How long he plans to stay in the ITA job and who may succeed him. That person is probably not on the board now, he believes. It will probably be someone from the outside.

10. A whole slew of issues that have been hanging out there for some time, and the air seems to have been cleared on many of them.

11. How far TH feels that he can take FastRoot in growth; his personality (and mine) and how it works or does not work in certain situations.

12. Philosophy: open source as a model, Bolshevism, etc.

Let me start with three stories to give you a sense of what I am dealing with in this or any story. People are by nature complex and multi-faceted. You cannot do justice to someone with one-dimensional portraits. And more importantly, any story or situation is rife with many points of view. We have Rashomon, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042876/, a variety of viewpoints that are also always shifting.

Story one: After the ITA mixer on June 12th at the Burwood Tap on Wrightwood, I called Julian Pretto. Julian advertises with TMR and he has also sponsored nine events now, some Tech Cocktails, and Silicon Prairie Social, and the ITA mixer. I told Julian that I was disappointed by the event and wondered if he was too. I told him that I felt it was not the usual ITA crowd, that it was too many 22-24 year old IT recruiters and not enough tech people. Julian told me that he had some strong views on the event as well and that of the nine events he had sponsored this one was the worst in terms of giving him access to a customer base, and he said he was tired of buying drinks for recruiters.

I am not going to do my commentary on the ITA party right now, but I have surveyed a number of folks about it. As one person said, it was not the typical ITA crowd, it was mostly younger and Terry Howerton told me they were looking for young professionals here who were middle management in established firms. Fred Hoch admits that it was a different from usual crowd. That does not make it worse, but in my view, it was too heavy on service providers, not heavy enough on technical people. One person told me that it was "not really an event that would drive business" but it was "fun to have a few beers and hang."

At the end of this report you will find a complete list of people who were pre-registered and the names with the "X" are people who did not show up. Also I have a list of those people I collected cards from and that is at the end of the report too. Without a basis of comparison you can't see my point, so if you look at the list of attendees on May 30, 2007, a year ago, you will see the difference. Compare the two lists side by side. They are both in this report.

I wrote this already, but I need to say it in terms of background for the story I am going to tell you now. Julian and I and Howerton can be a bit hot-headed at times. Julian does not mince words. I see him as a consummate salesman. He can be somewhat emotional at times. He comes from the Harlem/Diversey neighborhood called Montclair by the Brickyard Mall, he told me. They have wise guys in that hood, he has told me.

Anyway, Julian will probably have a fit that I am saying this, but I told him to shut up and let me do my job which is telling stories -- not making stories up -- among other things. I don't tell Julian how to do his job, I told him.

So, now for the meat of the story. Julian introduced himself to Terry Howerton at the ITA party -- they had never met before -- and he talked to Terry for a few minutes. I don't believe that Julian told Terry that he was an event sponsor --- not that it really mattered. Terry put out his hand and "dismissed" Julian, along the lines of "nice to meet you" and we are now through. That is the way it came across to Julian. In his mind, Howerton was being high and mighty toward him and dismissive. Maybe condescending, maybe arrogant. Julian was ticked enough that he told me that in his old hood, which is why I brought up his old hood, if someone "did that" he "would have been cold-cocked."

Now, I have talked to both Terry and Julian about this. I told Fred Hoch about it at the MIT-EF last Tuesday night. Dennis Serio was standing right there when I told him.

Let's be honest here. It is a good story and it has dramatic tension.

Terry did say to me that sponsors and service providers are not that much of a concern of his when we talked on the 14th at the SAB charity poker event. And I told Terry this at the SAB event.

First, when you're talking to people you have to be sure you have their undivided attention and focus. I don't think Terry was very focused on what I was saying at the poker event. It was a party, and he was enjoying himself.

I certainly did have his attention this last Sunday morning at Wilde on Broadway. He was drinking Greyhounds (vodka and grapefruit juice), but he was quite focused. He told me that:

A. If he had realized that Julian was a sponsor, he would have thanked him for his sponsorship; and he said that he should have thanked him;

B. That I misinterpreted what he said at the poker tournament even if I quoted him accurately. He was not dismissing sponsors and service providers. He was just saying that they are not his primary concern;

C. His objective at an event like the ITA party was to circulate and talk to as many people as possible -- as I do. Terry said that he was not looking to have long conversations with any one person, so he made it clear that his intent was not to be dismissive or rude;

D. He also pointed out to me that he and Julian are going to meet this week. It turns out that their meeting is today at 4:30pm in the offices of FastRoot.

Well, on this last point about their previous interaction on business issues having to do with ChicagoMicro and FastRoot, I have two versions of the story, one from Julian and one from Terry. Terry says that he and Julian's firm have been in contact for several months now, back and forth. Julian said that they had an initial contact two months ago and then a long period of no contact until last week when Terry contacted him to get together. Is the contact from Terry last week just coincidence or is it his attempt to patch things up? I don't know and is it really that important which it is?

Now this has to do with business which is what they will talk about, not the blather of this report.

But Julian is saying that the contact was reinitiated just last week and that it had not been a continuous process.

Look, even if Howerton is or was doing "damage control" by meeting with me on Sunday and with Julian today, so what?

To me, that is a sign of a good manager. When you become aware of a problem, you act on it and head it off at the pass.

First off, our discussion on Sunday was quite wide-ranging and it was productive in my view. Second, I did have a few things wrong which I want to correct now.

One thing was that the ITA party on the 12th had two other board members, Bruce Montgomery and Bill Waas. I said that there was only Terry and Fred. I stand corrected. But Terry did tell me at the poker tourney that they had not targeted board members.

The other error in my reporting was that I wrote about how Terry said that "I have IBM on my board" and I noted the egocentric nature of that comment. Well, it turns out that he was talking about the board of FastRoot which is his own firm. I thought he was talking about the ITA -- so maybe he is not as egotistical as I thought.

That was my first story. The point of that story is that first impressions can go awry but one should not base a long-term judgement on them.

Story two has to do with a conversation I had with one board member of the ITA about Howerton and I have been having several of those conversations with a number of board members.

I told this board member that some people think Howerton is arrogant, egotistical and even hot-headed. The response I got was "He's an entrepreneur, what do you expect?"

I agree. He is not a diplomat and entrepreneurs are independent minded and can be stubborn. I am that way and I glory in it. Why shouldn't Terry be the same?

Fred Hoch has said that he speaks his mind and what is wrong with that. But Fred points out that he, Fred, is charged with the ITA.

One of the topics in my long discussion with Terry was that he has been an entrepreneur for 20 years now who has been making payroll and this goes back to when he was a teenager. He attended one semester of college, won a national debate tournament, and then went back to running a business. He never continued his college education, but I can tell you that he is very knowledgeable and well read. Howerton has talked to me about many topics, including Bolshevism on Sunday.

Howerton is from Kansas City and many people know that of these three: Jack Kennedy, Adlai Stevenson and Harry Truman, Truman was the best read! And he lacked a college education, but he read every book in the library. People who lack a formal college education often compensate for it somehow. They work harder, try harder, etc. And they certainly may over-compensate which can account for some of the personality rough edges. Flip, Bob Bernard, Al Wasserberger, Terry Howerton, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerman, these guys have all had an impact. And they never really went to college. I think Gates had one year and dropped out, but it was at Harvard.

In my conversation with that same ITA board member, I asked him: "Is the board supportive of Howerton and do they think he is doing a good job?" There was a short pause in the response and the board member said "Yes, and not only Terry, there are a number of board members who are active on various committees, and there is input and active discussion on direction from quite a number of people" or words very close to those.

I told Terry this story and I ended up having a revelation of sorts. My interpretation, it turns out, of the response I got from that board member was negative towards Howerton. I was expecting the board member to say, "Sure, Terry is doing a fantastic job and we are all behind him 100%" and in the absence of that, I took it as a knock on the guy.

Well, Terry correctly pointed out to me that the board member whose name I did tell him said exactly the right thing. Of course, the ITA is a collective effort. Of course, it is not a dictatorship and it involves input and effort from a number of people.

That story says a lot. First it says to me how what matters is not so much what is said, but how what is said is processed in the hearer's mind. And I had a pre-fab response I was looking for and when I did not get it, I took it to mean something that was not meant.

When the board member did not say that Howerton is fantastic, I took it to mean he is terrible. The truth is that it is not about Howerton or Fred or anyone else in particular. It is an organization and it depends on many to do its job.

The moral of that story has more to do with me than with Howerton, but it is important because it shows how easy it is to mis-read what someone is saying.

My third story has to do with what happened Monday night at The Big Idea Forum. I believe that may have been Terry's first time at the meeting, but I am not sure about that.

If you put a gun to my head and said, "Ron, pick three people to review your business plan from this group" it would be tough to narrow it down, but Terry would in my mind be one of the three. Now, that is why I told him I want him there next month when I present.

The bottom line is that he is a smart guy and he is willing to share his insights. His comments were incisive and did not beat around the bush. Compared to the other people in the room, Terry was more critical (as in blunt and direct) and he was also more encouraging. He does not mince words and hence he can be an acquired taste for some. I think of diplomats like Doug Cogswell, Mr. Dartmouth and Harvard, or Mike Blair, Mr. Cyborg and Mr. Hewitt, or Jack Noonan, Mr. Ivory Tower of SPSS, or Terry Kirch, Mr. Bill Clinton of Naperville (and yes, Terry Kirch, I am leaving out a six- month episode in your life that we can now forget about).

Terry Howerton is not like the aforementioned gentlemen in many ways. He moves fast, he may not suffer fools gladly, he multi-tasks, which is why I believe that some of our conversations are not focused on as much as they should be. I have to say to both Terry and Julian, trying to have a serious conversation at a party where the people are packed in like sardines and the noise level is high is very tough.

So, Julian, forget about cold-cocking Terry and Terry, start over with the guy.

I will end today with this. I believe that Terry cares about making this a better community. I believe that he is also looking to build his own business. I believe he sees the two objectives as compatible. I believe that there are many things he and I can disagree about, but for the most part, we share a similar view on things like venture capital, etc.

Let me end for now so I can get ready to go to the ITA for the Jerry Putnam talk. Just for the record, I picked up the check on Sunday, so that there is no confusion on my being bought, and believe me, I have not been. I will wrap this up in the next day or two.

Terry, Sunday afternoon sounds fine, but we have to sit outside. Have you been to the new bar/restaurant in my hood, Wilde? They have outdoor seating and if it is a nice day, it would be perfect.

I will call you Sunday morning.

Puhlease... The Bolshevik were far better organizers, and much less likely to get distracted by shiny objects.

Yes, you did misquote me (or at least certainly misinterpretted me).

We do agree, on some things. I think the community has made great strides in the past several years... It's more vibrant, more connected today. And that's because the community came together and willed it to happen... In a completely "open source" sort of way, without egos or dominant personalities.

There's so much more to do, though: academic outreach to create and keep smart young people in the community, selfless mentorship that brings along successful leaders, and social networking with measurable results. Those are just a few of the private sector efforts that are starting to blossom in the community.

In public policy terms, it's ridiculous we lack meaning incentives that attract capital (especially capital from outside Illinois) to support early stage businesses, especially when all seven states surround us have programs. I would also like to see more dialogue between the private sector and policy makers about rural workforce development (outsourcing to "downstate").

And the role you COULD play (and on occasion HAVE played) is vital. Maybe our biggest failing as a tech community (and certainly one of the ITA's biggest failings) is effectively telling the "story" about all of the good things happening around town.

Want a frank conversation about some of the things I've learned, and some of the things I think need all of our attention?

312-xxx-yyyy - let's grab a coffee at the diner in your neighborhood Sunday afternoon.

Ron -
I'm around all weekend if you have some questions or concerns. You have my mobile number, and I'm happy to give you an hour over coffee if you have a genuine interest.

[Terry, I do need your cell phone number again.]

I'm afraid you're projecting a bit in describing my personality. I'm sure I come across as aggressive when I speak to you, probably because I often dislike your style (if not your substance)... and I'm especially forceful when I believe you're not listening beyond your preconceived agenda to agitate.

[Terry, ironically, we actually agree on many things. I agree with you about the absence of role models here, about how successful entrepreneurs tend to disappear as opposed to becoming mentors, about the ineffectuality of the VCs and the dearth of active angels, about the need for entrepreneurs to lead the way, etc., etc., etc. Where we disagree is that I don't easily get bedazzled by what you and Fred have done, if the metrics are just numbers like membership and retention rates. I want to really know where the value is and what has actually been delivered in value for members and others. Also, I hear the complaints from the plebes about you, you don't. So, don't be so quick to say I am "projecting" as opposed to reporting. And on top of that, I probably come across as high-handed and arrogant to many people too. My saying that about you is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black. ]

But I've always been open, and honest, so if you have something you want to clarify, I'd encourage you to do it before pissing me off with a diatribe or misquoting me.

[Terry, did I misquote you today? As for pissing you off, it is a badge of honor for me do that as long as it is based in fact, not fantasy. I never said you were not open or honest. I said that you can be difficult and that you come across as arrogant to many people. Everyone I talk to about you have said that. [Mr. X, an ITA board member] told me, "He's an entrepreneur, what do you expect?" And The May Report is nothing if not a diatribe. I don't know that I have many questions to ask, but I will be happy to call you about a few things we have not discussed in detail like the $200MM building you mentioned to me at ITA CityLights on April 3rd.]

[Terry, I'll be down at the ITA offices Monday at 6pm for an event not connected to the ITA, so maybe we can sit down about 4:30pm? One last thing, get a sense of humor about yourself, man. Sometimes you come across to me as as Bolshevik, way too committed to "the revolution" and you take yourself far too seriously.]

* Here is the long-promised write up of the May 30th ITA mixer which had 250 or so pre-registered. About 150 showed up and that was not all from the pre-registered, of course. Some of them did not show and others who were not pre-registered did show as it is always. I wtote most of this on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 12th and 13th.
